Heating Spray Foam & Coating Chemicals in the Cold

Why two-component foam and polyurea are so temperature-sensitive, and how to hold your A and B drums at spray temperature.

Temperature Is Everything for Spray Foam

Two-component spray foam and polyurea are chemistry, and chemistry cares about temperature. The A and B components have to be at the right processing temperature to atomize, mix at the correct ratio, and cure into good foam. Too cold, and none of that happens right.

Cold chemical is thick chemical. It won’t pump or atomize properly, the mix ratio drifts off-spec, and you get poor yield, soft or brittle foam, and rejected work — on a job you may not be able to redo cheaply.

The Drums Are Where It Starts

The chemical usually lives in 55-gallon drums (sometimes totes). In a cold rig, trailer, or staging area those drums drop below processing temperature fast — and a rig heater alone often can’t recover a cold drum quickly enough to keep spraying.

So the fix starts at the drum: bring the A and B components up to temperature and hold them there so the rig always gets chemical that’s ready to spray.

Even Heat, Held Steady

The right approach is a full-wrap, thermostatically controlled heater on each drum. Full coverage warms the whole drum evenly instead of scorching one side, and thermostatic control holds the target temperature instead of overshooting.

Consistent drum temperature is what gives you consistent spray — the same yield and cure from the first set to the last, even when it’s cold out.

What to Use

For spray foam and coating chemicals:

  • Spray foam heaters sized to hold A and B drums at spray temperature.
  • Drum heaters for warming and holding 55-gallon chemical drums.
  • Tote heaters when the chemical comes in totes.
  • Insulated wraps keep the heat in and the drum ready in cold rigs and staging.

Keep the Job Moving
