Every heating decision starts with the same question: what, physically, are you trying to warm? A drum of resin, a tote of chemical, a gas cylinder, a stretch of pipe, and a patch of frozen ground are five completely different problems — and each has a product family built for it.
Nailing this first step is what keeps you from buying the wrong class of equipment. A blanket meant for the ground will never wrap a cylinder properly, and a drum heater does nothing for a frozen pipe run.

How warm does the product actually need to be? “Keep it from freezing” is a very different job from “hold it at a specific pour temperature.” Freeze protection needs only low, steady heat; restoring viscosity or holding a process temperature needs controlled, adjustable heat.
Sensitive product raises the stakes — food-grade, chemical, and high-value materials need even heat with no hot spots, which is where full-coverage designs earn their keep.
The environment changes everything. An indoor shop at 50°F is a mild ask; an exposed well pad at -20°F with wind is not. Colder, windier, and more exposed conditions mean more heat loss — and a heater that’s undersized for the conditions will never reach temperature.
