Gas Cylinder Heating: Propane, CO₂ & Specialty Gas

Why Cylinders Lose Pressure When It’s Cold

Propane, CO₂, and many specialty gases are stored as a liquid under pressure. To come out as gas, the liquid has to vaporize — and vaporizing pulls heat out of the cylinder. Draw gas fast enough and the cylinder chills itself; add cold ambient on top and the vapor pressure drops until flow can’t keep up.

You see it as a process that starves: a burner that won’t hold flame, a beverage CO₂ line that goes flat, an extraction that stalls. The cylinder isn’t empty — it’s too cold to deliver.

What a Cylinder Warmer Actually Does

A cylinder heating blanket wraps the tank and gently replaces the heat that vaporization and the cold ambient take away, so the liquid keeps boiling off at the rate your process draws. The goal is steady, controlled warmth — enough to hold vapor pressure and flow, never enough to overheat the cylinder.

Controlled is the key word: a thermostat holds the cylinder in a safe band and shuts off on its own, so you get consistent pressure without babysitting it.

Propane, CO₂, and Specialty Gases

Propane is the classic case — high draw or a cold day and the regulator freezes off. CO₂ (beverage, greenhouses, lasers) behaves the same way and is very sensitive to draw rate. Specialty and process gases each have their own vapor-pressure curve, but the fix is the same: keep the cylinder warm enough to vaporize at your draw rate.

Cylinder size matters too — a small cylinder chills faster than a large one at the same draw, so it needs proportionally more help holding temperature.

Sizing and Safety

Sizing comes down to the gas, the cylinder size, your draw rate, and how cold it gets. A high, steady draw in cold weather needs more heat than an occasional light draw indoors. Match the warmer to the cylinder and hold it with a thermostat.

Never overheat a cylinder or exceed its rated temperature — the point is gentle, controlled warmth, not making it hot. For hazardous locations or high-draw industrial use, size it with that in mind; the heater selector is a fast starting point.

When to Warm, and When to Ask

If your gas flow falls off in the cold, or a regulator freezes under load, a cylinder warmer is usually the fix. For a manifold of cylinders, an unusual gas, or a hazardous-area location, it’s worth having it sized rather than guessed.
