Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is a precise blend of urea and deionized water, and that water content means it freezes at about 12°F (-11°C). Across most of the country that’s a temperature you hit every winter — so any DEF stored outdoors or in an unheated space is at risk.
Frozen DEF isn’t ruined — it freezes and thaws without breaking down — but frozen DEF isn’t usable, and a truck or machine that can’t draw DEF can’t run right.
Modern diesel engines use DEF in their SCR (selective catalytic reduction) systems to meet emissions rules. Starve that system and the engine derates — it deliberately cuts power — or throws faults that pull equipment out of service.
For a fleet, a yard of trucks that can’t dose DEF is an expensive morning. On a remote site it can mean a crew waiting on a thaw. Keeping DEF above freezing costs far less than the downtime it prevents.
DEF has the opposite risk too: hold it too hot for too long and the urea slowly breaks down and the fluid drifts off-spec. So the goal isn’t “hot” — it’s controlled, gentle warmth that keeps DEF in a safe window.
That’s why thermostatic control matters for DEF specifically: it holds the fluid above the 12°F freeze point without ever cooking it.
The fix is a heated jacket sized to the container:
Walk your yard and inventory where DEF lives — which drums, totes, and bulk tanks sit where the cold reaches them — and protect them before the temperature drops, not after a derated truck shows you the problem.
