Voltage & Power for Industrial Heaters

How to match a heater to the power you actually have on site — 120V, 240V, or 480V, single or three phase — without tripping breakers or under-powering the job.

Start With What You Have on Site

Before you pick a heater, know your power. Industrial heaters come in 120V, 208–240V, and 480V versions, single or three phase — and the wrong one either won’t plug in, won’t reach temperature, or trips your breakers. What’s available at the drum, the tank, or the job site decides the options before anything else.

A 120V outlet is convenient but limited in wattage; 240V and 480V deliver more power for bigger loads and faster heat-up. Matching the heater to your supply is what keeps it both safe and effective.

Watts, Amps, and Breakers

Every heater draws a certain wattage, and that wattage pulls amps on your circuit. A 1,440-watt tote heater on 120V draws about 12 amps — nearly a full 15-amp circuit by itself. Put two on the same circuit and you trip the breaker.

The rule of thumb: take the heater’s wattage, divide by your voltage to get amps, and make sure the circuit — and everything else on it — can handle it. Higher voltage means fewer amps for the same power, which is why bigger loads move to 240V and 480V.

Single vs. Three Phase

Smaller heaters run on single-phase power — standard for most drums, totes, and pails. Larger loads and industrial plants often have three-phase power, which delivers more power more efficiently for big heaters, process heaters, and multi-zone systems.

If you have three-phase available, a three-phase heater is usually the right call for a large load. If you only have single phase, that narrows the heater size — and may point toward a custom or multi-unit solution.

Don’t Forget the Controls

Power is only half of it — how you control it matters too. A simple preset thermostat is fine for freeze protection; an adjustable or digital controller lets you dial in and hold a precise temperature, and a control panel runs several zones at once.

Matching the control to the job protects your product and your equipment: the right controller holds temperature without overheating and shows you what’s happening.
