Cold-Weather Concrete & Ground Guide

The Freeze Risk to Fresh Concrete

Concrete poured in the cold is fragile. It cures through a chemical reaction that slows dramatically as the temperature drops — and if fresh concrete freezes before it sets, the damage can be permanent, leaving you with weak, cracked, or failed work.

That’s why cold-weather pouring isn’t just about getting concrete in the ground; it’s about holding it at a temperature where it can actually cure and gain strength.

Controlled Curing With Blankets

Curing blankets hold a pour at a controlled temperature so hydration continues and the concrete reaches strength on schedule. Even, insulated coverage means the whole slab cures uniformly — no weak spots from cold edges, no cracking from uneven temperature.

The payoff is a longer working season: with the right heat, cold weather stops being a hard stop on concrete work.

Thawing Frozen Ground First

Before you can pour or dig, the ground often has to be thawed. Frozen soil stops excavation, footings, and backfill cold. Ground thawing blankets lay over the area and thaw the soil from the surface down, and they protect fresh below-grade work from re-freezing.

Used together, thawing blankets open the ground and curing blankets protect the pour — keeping the whole sequence moving through winter.
