Why Heat Shows Up in Your Print
As a press runs, friction and drying heat raise the temperature of the rollers and the substrate. That changes ink viscosity and tack, shifts dot gain, and — because paper and film expand with heat — moves the image out of register between units. The faster you run, the worse it gets. Stable roller and dampening temperatures are what keep a long run looking like the proof.
Where Cooling Connects
- Ink and dampening rollers — chilled to hold ink behavior and register.
- UV / LED-UV lamps and their power supplies — high heat output that must be removed for lamp life.
- Dryers and chill rolls (web/heatset) — set the web back to a stable temperature after drying.
- Bearings and drives — steady temperature for mechanical consistency.
UV printing raises the stakes. UV and LED-UV curing put a lot of heat into the press and substrate. Presses with UV almost always need dedicated chilling to protect lamps and keep thin substrates flat.
Sizing and Setpoint
Size from the press builder’s cooling spec (roller circuit load plus any UV/dryer load), and run a setpoint that holds the rollers stable without dropping below the pressroom dew point — condensation on rollers or substrate causes its own defects. As with most precision processes, stability beats raw capacity.

Why does roller temperature affect color and register?
Heat changes ink tack and viscosity and expands the substrate, so dot gain and registration drift as the press warms. Holding roller temperature steady keeps the last sheet matching the first.
Do I need a chiller if I do not run UV?
High-speed and heatset work still benefit from roller and chill-roll cooling for register and finish. UV simply makes dedicated cooling close to mandatory because of the added heat.
How cold should the water be?
Cold enough to hold the rollers stable, but not below the pressroom dew point — condensation on rollers or substrate causes defects. The right setpoint is stable, not lowest.
