Why Coolant Temperature Sets Your Tolerance

Steel grows roughly 0.0007% per °F. On a one-meter part, a 10°F coolant swing is enough to move a dimension past a tight tolerance band. When your machine, your part, and your coolant all sit at a steady temperature, the math is predictable. When the coolant warms up over a shift, the part you make at 7 a.m. is not the part you make at 2 p.m.

That is why precision shops chill coolant rather than just filter it — thermal stability is dimensional stability.

Where the Heat Comes From

Most shops size a chiller for the spindle or the hydraulics and forget the largest source: the cut itself. Grinding is the worst case — nearly all of the grinding power becomes heat at the wheel-work interface. High-metal-removal milling and Swiss turning are not far behind.

Hold the band, not just the number. For precision work the tightness of control (±1°F) matters more than the exact setpoint. A chiller with a tight, stable control loop beats a bigger chiller that hunts.

Sizing Without Guessing

The honest way to size is by heat load, not by tank size. Spindle and hydraulic loads come straight off the machine builder's spec sheet. The cutting load scales with your metal-removal rate. Add them, then add margin for the hottest day and the most machines you run at once.

Why not just use the building chilled water or a cooling tower?

Tower or building water drifts with the weather and the season — fine for rough work, not for holding a tight dimensional tolerance all shift. A dedicated chiller gives you a setpoint you actually control.

How tight does the control need to be for grinding?

For precision grinding, ±1°F is a common requirement. The chiller’s control stability matters as much as its raw capacity.

One chiller for the whole shop or one per machine?

Central works when machines run similar loads; per-machine gives independent setpoints and isolation for mixed or precision work. Either can be sized correctly — the deciding factor is how varied your work is.
