The Job: Remove Heat as Fast as the Reaction Makes It

In an exothermic reaction, heat is generated where and when the chemistry happens — often in a sharp peak. The cooling system has to pull that heat out through the reactor jacket at least as fast, or the temperature climbs, the reaction accelerates, and you lose control of both quality and safety. This is why reactor cooling is sized around the peak heat-release rate.

What Chilled Reactor Cooling Controls

Low-temperature work needs the right fluid. Below the freezing point of plain water you move to glycol mixtures or other secondary fluids. The fluid choice changes the chiller’s required capacity because its specific heat and viscosity differ — our sizing tool accounts for this.

Sizing the Right Way

Work from the reaction’s peak heat-release rate and the lowest jacket temperature you need, in the fluid you will actually use. Add margin so the chiller can both reach setpoint and hold it during the exotherm. If you are unsure of the peak load, that is exactly the conversation to have with us before buying.

FAQ

Why size for peak instead of average heat load?

Exothermic reactions release heat in a spike. If the chiller can only handle the average, the batch overheats during the peak — risking off-spec product or a runaway. Size for the maximum heat-release rate.

When do I need glycol instead of water?

Any time your jacket setpoint is near or below water’s freezing point. Glycol or another secondary fluid lets you go colder, but it changes the required capacity, so the chiller has to be sized for that fluid.

Can one chiller both heat and cool the reactor?
